A Cherokee Indian Fable
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two 'wolves' inside us all. One is EVIL. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is GOOD. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf wins?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed!"
Calvin & Hobbes
This is my favorite comic strip. Bill Watterson created the strip 1985-95. It is difficult to quantify the strips' greatness. Calvin is a highly intelligent child that wantonly & nonchalantly creates mischief. Hobbes is his best friend, his Jiminy Cricket. The wacky, deadpan Hobbes always got the best lines. Sometimes the strip would tell a story that ran for weeks. The cloning series stands out: Calvin created a cloning machine. His clone continued the job to create four more copies of Calvin and chaos began. My favorite strip had deer hunting in an office because the human race was over-populating. Watterson continually amazed me with his tenderness and literary puns.
Bill Watterson's Rules
Writing a novel:
There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.
Quotes:
That's one of the remarkable things about life. It's never so bad that it can't get worse.
There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want.
Nothing spoils fun like finding out it builds character.
The only skills I have the patience to learn are those that have no real application in life.
